What kobold names should sound like
Kobold names tend to be short, snappy and full of bite. Names like Skritt, Vex, Yarrik or Snik feel right because they hit fast and stick in the ear. Long, flowing names rarely suit kobolds unless they belong to a sorcerer, a chieftain or a self proclaimed dragon prophet who has decided that three syllables are required to honor the great wyrm above.
How to use the generator
Run the generator and read each name with a slight hiss or yip. If a name makes you want to crouch behind a rock and giggle, it is probably perfect. Keep a small list and assign roles. The boldest name becomes the trap maker. The strangest name becomes the shaman. The shortest, sharpest name belongs to the scout who is currently watching your party from the ceiling.
Names by tribe and role
Warrior kobolds suit hard, clipped names like Krag, Snarl or Vesk. Trap makers and tinkers favor clicking, mechanical sounds such as Tikkit, Sprokk or Wirrin. Sorcerers and dragon priests earn longer, ceremonial names tied to their patron wyrm, like Vaaskryn the Ember Tongue or Issarra of the Black Coil. Tribes themselves benefit from names rooted in their lair or god, such as the Ashscale, the Deepyip or the Children of the Sleeping Flame.
Using kobold names in your story
Kobold names work hardest when paired with attitude. A kobold called Snikrit who introduces himself with a long, grand title is funnier and scarier than a nameless mob. Let one named kobold escape an early encounter, then bring him back with a grudge and a slightly bigger trap. Names turn pests into recurring villains. Allied kobolds gain warmth the same way, becoming loyal followers, sneaky guides or surprisingly gifted apprentices.
Choosing the right name
Pick the name that makes you smile when you imagine it shouted from a dark tunnel. That smile is the kobold winning, just a little, before the dice are even rolled.
Hatching Your Kobold Name
To name a kobold, reflect on:
- Should it include hisses or hard consonants?
- Do you want a clan epithet?
- Will it hint at profession-miner, trapmaker?
- How many syllables suit quick speech?
- Does it roll off the tongue in caves?
