Demon Cover Identity Generator (World of Darkness)
Updated: 2026-04-24 (created: 2025-10-01)
An Unchained without a Cover is a target. The God-Machine notices gaps, and angels follow noticed things. This generator builds Cover identities for Demon: The Descent: a name, a plausible job, a neighborhood, and the small human textures that keep a fallen angel off the radar. Use it to spin up a fresh Cover after a burn, to seed NPCs in a Ring, or to give a player something to anchor their demon to between infiltrations and Pacts that go sideways.
Generate Demon cover identities (World of Darkness)
In Demon: The Descent, a Cover is a stolen or fabricated human life that hides the Unchained from the God-Machine's pattern recognition. It needs a name on a lease, a face on a license, a job that pays in checks, and habits a neighbor would describe without thinking. The strongest Covers are boring. A night-shift dispatcher named Marlene Ostrowski draws less attention than a private eye named Black. The generator leans toward grounded, slightly tired identities: bus drivers, paralegals, dental hygienists, line cooks, freight inspectors.
Layers to roll
Legal name and preferred nickname.
Day job and shift pattern.
One small lie the Cover tells about itself, like a fake hometown or a dead spouse.
One mundane attachment, such as a softball league or a sick parent in care.
Using Covers at the table
Decide what the Cover loves about being human. The Demon may resent the routine, but the Cover feeds on it. When a Pact goes wrong and the player has to burn the Cover, that loss should sting because the table knew the small life that just ended. Storytellers can use the same generator to populate a Ring with believable allies and informants, each with their own Cover-thin existence.
Hooks
Maybe the original human the Cover is based on left a child behind. Maybe a coworker has started asking sharp questions. Let the Cover bleed into the chronicle until the Unchained is not sure where the mask ends.
Weaving the Cover
A Demon’s Cover needs to be forgettable, yet plausible. Ask yourself:
Is the name common enough to not draw attention?
Does it hint at a specific nationality or region?
Should it sound modern or slightly retro?
Will the name conflict with their true, celestial nature?
Is the identity's story simple enough to maintain?
