What a cell name does
In Hunter: The Vigil, the cell is the smallest unit of the war: a handful of mortals who have decided to stand between their city and the things in it. The name is operational. It marks meeting points, signs off on tip-offs to allied crews, and gets carved into the underside of a bar table when somebody does not come back. Strong cell names tend to do one of three things. They reference the cell's territory, like a bridge, a bus line, or a parish. They reference method, such as fire, paperwork, or quiet burials. Or they reference the first hunt, the night the cell was forged.
Tone by tier
- Tier One: short, local, and a little embarrassed. Think Late Shift, The Greenline Four, Ash Street Crew.
- Tier Two Compacts: slightly more formal, with a code word the Compact recognizes. Examples include Long Vigil 7, Knight-Errant Sigma.
- Tier Three Conspiracies: institutional, almost bureaucratic. Cells become Field Office designations, like Reliquary Section B.
Using the names at the table
Pick a name and ask what outsiders think it means. A bartender, a beat cop, and a rival cell should each have a different guess. Decide what the cell would never call itself, and let players reject one name out loud. That refusal often reveals more about the crew than the chosen handle.
Story hooks
Maybe another cell stole the name first and now claims the kills. Maybe a journalist has the name in a notebook locked in evidence. Let the alias create pressure as the Vigil grinds on.
Naming the Vigil
A Hunter Cell's name should be a call to action or a statement of intent. Consider:
- Does the name sound like a military unit, a protective ward, or a secret society?
- Should it include a number, Greek letter, or code for organization?
- Does it hint at the type of supernatural threat they face?
- Will it reflect their Creed (e.g., Faithful, Wayward, Innocent)?
- Is the name a desperate cry for protection or a bold challenge?
Hunter Cell Name FAQs
Questions about naming your anti-supernatural unit in the World of Darkness:
How are Hunter Cell names generated?
The generator mixes organizational prefixes (like 'Unit' or 'Section') with protective, military, or ominous keywords, often including a number or Greek letter for a coded effect.
Are these names tied to a specific Hunter Creed?
While not explicitly linked, names like 'Ward' or 'Guardian' may feel more appropriate for the Faithful, while 'Specter' or 'Delta' could suit the Wayward.
Can I use these names for military or police units?
Absolutely-the names use a military/tactical style that works well for any specialized task force in a modern setting.
How many names can I generate?
Unlimited-click as often as you like to find the perfect tactical moniker for your team.
